Heating Thermostat: The Definitive FAQ Guide

1. What Are Thermostats for Floor Heating?

If you have or plan to install underfloor heating, you will need to choose the right thermostat.

A thermostat is the brain of the heating system. It allows you to control the temperature. Thermostats work together with air and floor sensors to detect the temperature.

There are simpler and more advanced thermostats. Almost every thermostat offers a 24-hour timer cycle feature.

The more advanced thermostats include zone control, smartphone app, and wi-fi connection features.

2. How does a Heating Thermostat work?

There are two types of heating thermostats based on technology – electronic and electromechanical.

Electronic thermostats are newer and work like a small computer. They have sensors that check if your home is at the right temperature. Some of them have features like programmable settings and wi-fi.

Electromechanical systems work with either a bi-metal coil or a metal strip.

When the temperature falls or rises, the metal will move. It sends a signal that the heating should be turned off or on.

There are two types of sensors for heating thermostats.

Air sensors

You can use air sensors to measure temperature in a room.

It is possible to use one or multiple air sensors. If you have a larger area and want to average the temperature, then you should use multiple air sensors.

It is important to know that hot air is lighter than a cold one. That means that higher parts of a room are probably warmer. So, the place where you put the sensor is very important.

If you place it too high or too low, your system will overheat or over cool.

The best height is around your chest level. Also, make sure not to put your air sensors next to devices that cool or warm the air.

Floor sensors

Floor sensors are typically placed between runs of heating wire under the floor.

They measure the temperature of the floor.

Because of the difference in temperature on the ground and closer to the ceiling, it is important to have floor sensors.

If you only measure air temperature, the floor heating system could get too hot to the touch.

That’s because the air is cooler closer to the ground.

It takes a bit longer for underfloor heating to reach the desired temperature. Your thermostat can be set up to start the heating earlier.

So, it reaches the desired temperature at the time you set it up.

3. What are the common features of heating thermostats?

Some of the same thermostats have different features depending on where they are sold. That’s because heating systems are different in various regions. The power works at a different voltage, some regions have a different metric system, etc.

4. What are the types of heating thermostats?

There are several types of heating thermostats. It depends on their application, history, and technology.

Based on application:

Water Floor Heating Controls

This type of heating uses a network of pipes to run hot water from a boiler or some other heating device. Water in radiators is around 70-90°c.

But, for an underfloor water heating system to work effectively, it is enough for the temperature to be around 50°c. That’s why suppliers recommend a safety device to prevent temperature going over 60°c.

If your heating network is placed under a layer of screed, your room will need longer to warm up. Another option is to place the heating network close to the floor surface. That way, it will heat up quicker.

Electric Floor Heating Controls

This type of heating uses electric wires that are installed beneath a floor. There are several types of electric floor heating:

  1. Underfloor heating mats (good for kitchens and dining rooms)
  2. Underwood/carpet/vinyl floor mats (good for bathrooms)
  3. Underfloor loose wire systems (good for odd shape rooms)
  4. In screed heating systems.

All of these types are controlled by using a temperature sensor, thermostat, and a control panel.

Based on history and technology:

Mechanical Thermostats

Mechanical thermostats have two pieces of different metal laminated together.

The metals have a different rate of expansion to the same temperature.

That’s how the thermostat controls the temperature.

But, these kinds of thermostats don’t set up the exact temperature. Instead, they set up a range of temperatures.

The manufacturer calibrates the thermostat close to room temperature.

But, when you start using the thermostat, the temperature can be about 5 degrees above or below it at any given time.

Digit Thermostats

Digit thermostats most typically have these three features:

  1. Touch key
  2. LED screen
  3. Programmable

With a digit thermostat, you can pre-determine the temperature of your home for a number of days. That way, your heating system won’t work unnecessarily when no one is at home.

This type of thermostat is good for the home’s energy-efficiency. It can reduce home energy bills by up to 20 percent.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats learn users’ behavior over time. Once your start using a smart thermostat, it will remember how you set up the temperature.

After some time, it will start alternating the temperature by itself. They are also programmable, so you can set up the temperature for the whole week.

The most useful feature is a wi-fi connection, so you can adjust the temperature remotely from your phone, tablet, or computer. Also, smart thermostats track and manage data on your home’s energy use.

They can also save up to 20 percent on your home’s energy bills.

5. What are the main components of a heating thermostat?

Thermostats can come in many different shapes and sizes. But, they all have the same or similar components. There are two major groups of components – hardware and software.

  • Hardware

  • Display screen or PLC Control Board with screen
  • Face outshell
  • Relay board
  • Back outshell
  • Software

6. What is the best place to install a heating thermostat?

How your heating system will work depends on where you place the thermostat.

If you put it in the wrong place, your utility bills are going to be higher.

First, the thermostat should be placed somewhere in the center of your home. That way, it will give you the best average home temperature.

Second, it should be placed on an interior wall.

Third, place it between 130 and 150cm above the floor.

This is important because hot air is lighter than a cold one.

If you place it lower, you might get too low of reading. If you place it too high, your temperature reading could get too high.

And fourth, don’t put your thermostat near a window or a door. Also, don’t locate it in direct sunlight and above air vents. Those are bad places because of a lot of air fluctuations in temperatures.

To sum up, thermostats should be placed at:

  • Center place
  • On interior wall
  • 130-150 cm above the floor
  • Away from windows, doors, direct sunlight, and above air vents

7. What temperature should Heating Thermostat be set at?

If you set your thermostat the right way, you will feel cozy and save money at the same time. To achieve that, there are a few rules you should follow:

  1. Know the outside temperature – you don’t want to make a big difference between outside and inside temperature. If the difference is too big, your heating system will work harder. So, you’ll spend more energy and more money. So, set the temperature as close to the outside one but still to feel comfortable.
  2. Keep patient – heating systems need time to adjust the temperature. Don’t turn the heating on to a higher temperature so it would get warmer faster. The heating system can exert only so much energy at once. That means it won’t get warmer faster. You will only spend more energy and money.
  3. Keep the temperature to the lowest comfortable point – the thermostat should be set between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius. Even if it is colder outside, don’t set the thermostat higher. Your place will heat up to the desired temperature no matter what the temperature outside is.

8. Should I turn the thermostat off when I’m not at home?

You should never turn off the thermostat completely. Instead, lower the temperature when you are not at home.

If you plan to leave for:You should turn your thermostat up or down:
Part of the dayA few degrees
Few days3-5 degrees
More than two weeks10 degrees

9. Can you remote control your home thermostat by voice?

Smart thermostats can be remotely controlled.

Those that have wi-fi connection enabled probably have a voice command option.

But, you should check with the supplier if that feature is possible.

If it is, then you can lower or higher the temperature in every room separately. Or, you can change the temperature of your entire home with one voice command.
